WA Greens Senator Jordon Steele-John has called on the Federal Government to clarify rumours circulating about the future of Yongah Hill Detention Centre, after fires tore through the facility earlier this week.
“I’ve been to Yongah Hill and the experience is one I will never forget. It is a cold, mechanical and dehumanising place that is representative of the broader system created by the major parties over the last two decades,” Senator Steele-John said.
“I am deeply concerned about the events of the last week; conditions such as those at Yongah Hill drive people to absolute desperation, which we are now seeing in the form of self-harm and violence.
“What will happen to this facility and what will happen to the people unfortunate enough to reside there? The culture of secrecy created by this government must stop now before there is any more harm and suffering in our name.
“The Department of Home Affairs and or the Minister for Immigration, David Coleman, must immediately put a stop to the rumours and let the people of Western Australia know the fate of Yongah Hill.
“Regardless of the alleged crimes of the people in Yongah Hill, Christmas Island is not a viable or humane option. We can and must do better.”
