We need stronger gun control laws to regulate the ownership and licensing of guns.
After the reforms following the Port Arthur Massacre, the issue of gun control has fallen off the national agenda. As a result gun lobbyists have succeeded in watering down national gun ownership laws. The promotion of “conservation hunting” has resulted in an increase in gun ownership and caused needless animal suffering. The Greens are committed to delivering stronger gun control laws to regulate the ownership and licensing of guns. The Australian Crime Commission estimates there are more than 250,000 illegal long-arms such as rifles and 10,000 illegal handguns in Australia. We know that there is a link between gun numbers and crime. Politicians must act to implement a tougher and more effective National Firearms Agreement.
